Together, they discuss rentals in the real estate market. Rich and Jane talk about the detriment long-term renting can have. Some may be surprised to hear that renting can have a negative health impact.
Rich quotes a study where it sites faster aging as a result of renting. Poverty is the 4th leading cause of death, behind heart disease, cancers and smoking and renting tends to keep the renter in a pattern of not being able to build equity.
Renting is not meant to be a permanent solution, meanwhile, the state of California voted against rent control, and landlords cannot raise their rent more than 10 percent. California has the second lowest ownership numbers, falling behind New York.
Rich and Jane give pointers to help you as a renter. You’ll need a proof of ID, recommendation letters, and a pay stub among other important documents. Rich stresses that you should learn about the rental market, read your lease carefully, get everything in writing and pay for a property inspection. These tips along with having renters insurance can help your process go smoothly.
