Rancho Santa Fe real estate team launches ‘Scents That Sell’ candle line

What does Rancho Santa Fe smell like? To Rancho Santa Fe native Laura Barry, her hometown evokes the woody and sweet fragrance of Palo Santo with a slight twinge of citrus, a not-too-earthy fragrance with hints of amber and vanilla.

Barry and her business partner Jim Graves, the number one selling real estate team in San Diego County in 2022, recently launched a new luxury candle line called The Scent That Sells. The Rancho Santa Fe candle, the smell of comfort and home, is one of two scents for sale.

“The whole idea of the candles came about by happenstance,” Barry said.

She had always noticed that when you go into certain spaces, like a day spa when they have a candle burning, the smell is highly emotive, creating a sense of zen and sending a calming message to the brain. It’s no different when you’re buying or selling a home.

“Scent is an integral part in the process of selling luxury properties,” Barry said. “Over the years of doing this, I’ve learned that just like furniture, smell decorates a home. It’s a form of decorating.”

The scent should be subtle, she said, blending in with the home environment. If you walk into a home and it smells stale or like someone’s dog, that can have a negative effect.

“I knew from burning other candles in houses that there were certain scents that were more luxurious and more subtle than others,” Barry said, noting that too much scent is not always a good thing. “If you have something luxurious, a scent that works well with the design and everything else, you have people linger longer. It feels good and it’s uplifting.”

The team created their signature fragrance: the Scent That Sells candle is a faint floral with vanilla and vetiver grasses. “It’s a clean smell and it’s subtle, it permeates the space without overpowering it.”

They started using it in their open houses and people were always asking what they were burning. All of the Scents That Sell candles are made in San Diego, all hand-poured using non-toxic, natural ingredients including soy wax. They are long-lasting and burn clean.

The glass tumbler that the candles are encased in are meant to be reusable, good for relaxing at home with a gin and tonic or seltzer water.
