Kushner Cos. LLC, the real estate company controlled by the extended family of Trump in-law Jared Kushner, has named its fourth general counsel in four years.
A spokeswoman for the New York-based firm confirmed that Jason Listhaus is now running the law department at Kushner Cos. Listhaus initially joined the privately held company late last year as counsel, having spent the previous three years working for litigation financier Validity Finance LLC.
He succeeds Jennifer Nellany, who earlier this month joined Cozen O’Connor as a real estate and hospitality partner in New York. Nellany was general counsel at Kushner Cos. for almost two years after coming over from Tishman Hotel Corp.
Kushner Cos. is separate from Jared Kushner’s A Fin Management LLC, a Miami-based private equity firm doing business as Affinity Partners, and his brother Joshua Kushner’s venture firm Thrive Capital Management LLC. Affinity and Thrive have both hired new legal chiefs in recent years.
A Bloomberg News report in 2017 determined that Kushner Cos. owned stakes in more than 60 New York City buildings although it owned a majority stake in fewer than half of them. Jared Kushner resigned as chief executive officer of the company, which was founded by his father, former attorney Charles Kushner, when he joined the Trump administration.
Kushner Cos., counseled by Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, mounted a $4.3 billion takeover bid in 2022 for Veris Residential Inc., an apartment building owner formerly known as Mack-Cali Realty Corp. Veris, advised by Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, ultimately rejected the offer.
Listhaus, who didn’t respond to a request for comment, is a former corporate associate at both Cadwalader and Fried Frank. He was hired in 2020 as the first in-house lawyer at Validity, a litigation financier backed by private equity firm TowerBrook Capital Partners LP. At Validity, where Listhaus was named general counsel in 2022, he helped negotiate and structure funding arrangements.
Last year, however, Validity began shedding staffers after TowerBrook reduced its investments in the firm. Kushner Cos. hired Listhaus in October.
Within six months he would be the top lawyer at the company, which recruited Nellany two years ago following the departure of former general counsel Christopher Smith, now of counsel in the real estate practice at Mintz Levin.
Smith started at Kushner Cos. in 2020 after the company’s prior general counsel, Emily Wolf, left for another job. Wolf is now legal chief for The Stro Cos., a New Jersey-based industrial real estate developer.
