Real estate deed solicitation scams target homeowners with letters that appear to be from government agencies. These letters often demand inflated fees of over $100 for a copy of a deed. Deed paperwork is typically available at the County Recorder’s Office for roughly $1 per page.
Buyers and sellers should always be suspicious of any mailings that resemble a government bill, always read the fine print before handing over any money or personal information and never pay a private company to get deed paperwork. It should only be obtained from the County Recorder, according to real estate attorneys.
If someone is unsure about a letter from someone claiming they need a copy of the house deed, contact the County Recorder and confirm its legitimacy.
